Our top tips to save on mattresses so you can get a good night's sleep
Shopping for a new mattress can be overwhelming. They’re expensive, and it’s hard to know where (or even how) to start looking for one. Mattresses are an investment in your health, and luckily, there are ample ways to save.
We’ve compiled a few tips to help you find the best deal, and we’ll guide you through the hows, whats and whens of mattress buying. You’ll want to know everything before taking the plunge, so don’t skip these tips:
1. Do Your Homework
You might already have a mattress in mind, but there is so much to consider before you buy. Do you want a firm mattress or a soft one? What size are you looking for? Is memory foam for you? Not all mattresses are created equal, so it’s always a good idea to do some research ahead of time. Think about your current mattress and what you like or dislike about it. This will help inform your next purchase.
Purple offers a handy tool to compare different mattresses. All the information is right there; you just need to determine your preferences. If you need more assistance, you can live chat with a mattress expert, call a customer service representative or find a showroom. Plus, there’s an entire page dedicated to reviews from actual customers, so you can explore how real people feel about their mattress.
Finally, keep an eye out for special discounts. For example, recent Purple shoppers saved up to $200 when they bought a mattress and base. Another deal saved customers as much as $350 on a mattress and sleep bundle that included options like pillows, sheets and mattress protectors.
2. Pick the Right Time to Buy
One of the best times to buy mattresses is around major holiday sales events. Many retailers offer long-running, sitewide sales during major holiday periods, such as Memorial Day and Labor Day. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are also popular times for steep discounts. Shoppers can usually save as much as 20% during holiday promotions. For example, this past Labor Day, Saatva offered $200 off select mattresses.
If your aching back demands a new mattress now, make sure to check store websites for a heads-up on upcoming sales and current mattresses offered at a discount. Better yet, visit our Saatva coupon page for all the latest discounts. No matter the time of year, there’s sure to be an opportunity for you to save big.
3. Find Different Ways to Save
Don’t assume the price you see online is the lowest one possible. There are tons of ways to whittle down the cost if you look for creative ways to save.
First, look for retailers that have special discounts for students, teachers, active military members, veterans or healthcare workers. Casper offers 20% off for members of the military, healthcare professionals and educators.
Saatva takes off $225 from orders over $1,000 for active members of the military, first responders, teachers, healthcare workers, government employees and senior citizens. And finally, Purple has a discount of 10% for students, teachers, healthcare professionals, first responders, active and retired members of the military and truck drivers. In addition, you may be able to combine these savings with additional coupons.
Next, sign up for the mailing list, which is an easy way to get a discount. Retailers usually offer coupons of up to 20% off simply for registering your email address. You can always unsubscribe after you get that promo code.
Another one of our favorite tricks is to leave the retailer website right before buying. You’ll usually get a pop-up window with a coupon, enticing you to complete your purchase. These discounts range from 10% to 20% off.
Lastly, just ask! Most websites have a live chat option where you can ask the representative for the best deal they can give you. They may just knock off the cost of shipping or throw in a freebie.
4. Have a Sleepover
Well, not a literal one. But, if you know anyone who’s also looking for a mattress, take advantage of referral programs.
At Saatva, when you refer a friend, you’ll both receive a $100 Visa gift card. Casper’s referral program gives your friend 20% off a mattress and rewards you with a $75 Amazon gift card. With a referral at Purple, your friend will save up to $75 on a mattress, and you’ll get a $75 gift card to one of 25 different retailers, like Nordstrom or Starbucks. That’s a lot of lattes (not that you’ll need them after the restful sleep you’ll get on your new mattress).
5. Buy a Mattress Topper Instead
If you’re not quite ready to buy a new mattress, but you’re not satisfied with the quality of your sleep, consider buying a mattress topper. Toppers are a great, affordable solution for more comfortable sleep.
Casper has mattress toppers in every size, with twin toppers starting at just $199. If you manage to score one on sale, you can pay as little as $135. Plus, new customers score 15% off their first purchase when they subscribe to the newsletter. There are almost always sales going on, so be sure to check out other great deals.
6. Understand the Return Policy
Research the return policies before you invest in a new mattress, because knowing them ahead of time can save a ton of money (and hassle). Most retailers have trial periods, but they can vary widely from seller to seller.
Purple, for example, offers a 100-night trial, which allows you to return any mattress within 100 days of purchase. However, you must give the mattress a try for at least 21 days before you can return it, and you will be on the hook for shipping charges.
Saatva has an even longer in-home trial period of 180 nights. If you do return your Saatva mattress, you’ll pay a $99 flat fee to cover labor and transport costs.
Like Purple, Casper allows you to try your new mattress for 100 nights. You must keep it at least 30 days before initiating a return, but they are 100% free.
